In October of 2013, the United States Department of Agriculture issued a health warning regarding a salmonella outbreak linked to three Foster Farms processing plants in California. Now, nearly half a year later, the center for Disease Control and Prevention reports the outbreak is still a threat.
New reports from the CDC in February and March have brought the total number of people sickened by this outbreak to 524. Tragically, despite the warning issued by the USDA, Foster Farms never issued an official recall for potentially infected chickens.
In January of 2014, reports that this particular outbreak had sickened people in 23 states came to light. At that time, 74 percent of those cases were in California, where Foster Farms is headquartered.
