It just keeps getting worse for General Motors. As of October 20, the number of deaths connected to the company’s defective ignition switch problem climbed to 29. As we’ve unfortunately discovered, GM executives sat idly by while people died and sustained injuries.
Reuters reported on October 20 that, to date, 29 victims have died at the hands of defective GM vehicles. The deaths are related to a defect in ignition switches, which can interrupt power to a car moving at full speed down the highway. Power steering, power brakes, and even air bags shut down, turning the moving vehicle into an uncontrollable steamroller. These vehicles place drivers, passengers, and other motorists at risk of a severe car accident.
General Motors executives acknowledged that its engineers knew about the faulty ignition switch for over ten years before GM publicly admitted the problem and began its recall of more than 2.5 million passenger vehicles. According to Reuters, GM has received more than 1,500 claims for death and injuries since August 1.
